Where 49ers QB Brock Purdy Needs to Improve

The San Francisco 49ers’ recent loss to the Arizona Cardinals was a tough one, especially given their double-digit lead heading into the fourth quarter. For the second time in a few weeks, the 49ers found themselves unable to close out a game, mirroring their Week 2 collapse against the Los Angeles Rams. While there are several issues the team needs to address, one area of focus remains the play of quarterback Brock Purdy.

Purdy has been a steadying presence for the 49ers, providing much-needed stability at the quarterback position. His poise and decision-making have been key to the team’s success, but there is still room for growth. One area where Purdy can elevate his game is in his ability to get the ball out faster. Though he often extends plays and looks for the perfect opportunity, sometimes quicker decisions could benefit the team.

Even Tom Brady, who provided commentary during the game, noted Purdy’s potential to improve in this aspect. Brady suggested Purdy treat the ball like a “hot potato,” emphasizing the need for quicker releases. While some might point to the offensive line for issues with pass protection, the numbers tell a different story. According to Next Gen Stats, the 49ers’ offensive line ranks fifth in pressure rate allowed (39.3%), yet leads the league in time to pressure (3.02 seconds). This indicates the offensive line is performing better than some critics suggest.

Purdy’s tendency to extend plays has resulted in a higher scrambling rate. He averages 9.1 scramble yards per dropback this season, second only to Jayden Daniels. While his ability to move and escape pressure is a great asset, there are times when taking shorter, safer throws could prevent unnecessary scrambles. In Week 3 against the Rams, Purdy posted a career-high 11.8 scramble yards per dropback, followed by 11.1 yards in Week 4 against the Patriots.

While Purdy’s deep-ball vision is one of his strengths, recognizing when to take checkdowns is a key area for him to develop. In the final moments against the Cardinals, an interception resulted from waiting on a deep route when a short throw to George Kittle was available. With just a few adjustments, Purdy can continue to thrive as a leader for the 49ers’ offense.

Purdy’s growth as a quarterback is crucial, and with his talent and work ethic, there’s every reason to believe he can make the necessary improvements. As he fine-tunes his decision-making, the 49ers’ offense will only become more dangerous.
