Brock Purdy played the hero in the 49ers Divisional Round win over the Green Bay Packers. Before the Divisional Round matchup between the San Francisco 49ers and Green Bay Packers on Saturday night, teams coached by Kyle Shanahan had never won a game in 30 attempts where they trailed by five or more points in the 4th quarter. Going into the 4th quarter against Green Bay, the 49ers were down 21-14, suggesting that history might repeat itself, and the Packers were close to causing a significant upset against the NFC’s #1 seed.
Down 21-17 and taking possession with just over 6 minutes remaining in the game, 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy conveyed a strong message to his teammates in the huddle. “I told them with six minutes left, this might be our last possession. If we don’t make something happen now, it could be the last time we gather in this huddle together. So, everyone, bring your best,” Purdy stated after the game.
“I just told them that with six minutes left this might be the last time we get the ball,” Purdy said after the game, per Ann Killion of the San Francisco Chronicle. Purdy continued, saying, “If we don’t do something with it this might be the last time we’ll be in this huddle together. So everybody bring it.”
In a dramatic turn of events during the last six minutes of the game against the Packers on Saturday night, the usually overlooked player, referred to as “Mr. Irrelevant,” became the focal point. He orchestrated a game-winning drive culminating in a six-yard rushing touchdown by Christian McCaffrey with 1:07 remaining. Throughout the crucial Niners drive, Purdy showcased precision, completing six of seven pass attempts and executing a nine-yard red zone scramble that set the stage for McCaffrey’s decisive score. For Purdy, leading San Francisco on the game-winning drive boiled down to the simple mantra of “finding a way.”
