49ers QB Purdy highlights one ‘weird’ feeling entering third season
Brock Purdy has seamlessly adjusted to his role as the 49ers’ starting quarterback, demonstrating a remarkable ability to step up under the bright lights. However, as he gears up for the 2024 NFL season, Purdy admitted there’s one aspect of his journey that feels a bit surreal.
Now entering his third professional season, and his second as San Francisco’s starter, Purdy finds it strange to already be considered a veteran in the 49ers’ locker room.
“It’s weird,” Purdy shared with KPIX’s Vern Glenn in an exclusive interview. “I’m going into my third year and I got rookies coming in asking me for advice. I’m like, ‘Dang, that was me in what feels like yesterday.’ So time’s going by fast but I’m enjoying every minute of it.”
Purdy recognizes the unique dynamics of being surrounded by a highly talented roster, and despite the rapid passage of time, he remains focused on staying true to himself. “Man, we got such a great team and such great guys around me. So for me, I just got to be myself. I don’t know if I’m considered a vet yet. Year 3. I still feel young.”
Indeed, Purdy is still young by NFL standards. The former Mr. Irrelevant, just 24 years old, is coming off back-to-back seasons where he led the 49ers to the NFC Championship Game. In his second season as the starting quarterback, Purdy guided San Francisco to Super Bowl LVIII, though they fell just short of capturing the Lombardi Trophy.
While Purdy may still be in the early stages of his career, his success at the highest level of competition—the NFL, where only the best thrive—makes it easy to overlook his youth. His maturity and professionalism off the field, coupled with his elite performance on it, have already established him as a leader. Purdy, now seen as a seasoned pro, is poised to continue leading the 49ers to more success, with the ultimate goal of “someday, winning a Super Bowl” very much within reach.
