In December 2023, Danish tennis sensation Holger Rune made a significant addition to his coaching team by bringing on Severin Luthi, the long-time mentor of Swiss legend Roger Federer. This strategic move came just weeks after Rune had appointed six-time Grand Slam champion Boris Becker as his coach, aiming to bolster his performance ahead of the 2024 season.

Severin Luthi, 47, served as Federer’s coach from 2007 until the 20-time Grand Slam champion’s retirement in 2022. He also holds the position of Swiss Davis Cup captain, a role he has fulfilled since 2005. Under his guidance, Switzerland clinched its first Davis Cup title in 2014, with Federer and Stan Wawrinka leading the team.

Rune expressed his enthusiasm about the new addition to his team through a social media post, stating, “Very happy to welcome Severin to my team alongside Boris.” This collaboration brings together a wealth of experience, combining Luthi’s extensive coaching background with Becker’s on-court expertise.

The decision to integrate both Luthi and Becker into Rune’s coaching staff was influenced by the positive dynamics observed during their initial training sessions. Rune’s mother and manager, Aneke Rune, noted the immediate synergy between the coaches: “After the test weeks in Monaco in the pre-season, where both Boris and Severin were at the training sessions, it was very clear that there was really good energy both between Holger and Severin, but also between Boris and Severin.”

This dual-coach arrangement is designed to provide Rune with comprehensive support throughout the demanding ATP tour schedule. By alternating their presence at tournaments, Luthi and Becker can ensure that Rune receives consistent guidance while maintaining the coaches’ well-being and motivation. Aneke Rune elaborated on this approach, emphasizing the importance of keeping the coaching team “fresh and inspired to help Holger as best as possible.”
