To be aggressive or not to be in NFL free agency for the Broncos….
As the Denver Broncos enter the 2024 NFL free agency period, the front office faces a crucial decision: should they be aggressive in the market or take a more measured approach? Given their recent struggles and lack of a true franchise quarterback, the answer isn’t straightforward.
Why the Broncos Should Be Aggressive
Denver has multiple roster holes, particularly at quarterback, offensive line, and defensive front seven. If they want to compete in the AFC West, they need upgrades. After parting ways with Russell Wilson, the team has significant dead cap money but could create space through restructures and cuts. A bold approach could include targeting a bridge quarterback (like Kirk Cousins or Baker Mayfield) or investing in premium positions like edge rusher and offensive tackle.
The Sean Payton era isn’t a rebuild; it’s a recalibration. That means finding veteran talent to complement younger players like Patrick Surtain II and Javonte Williams. If the Broncos want to be competitive in 2024, they’ll need to act aggressively in free agency to avoid relying solely on the draft.
Denver’s cap situation isn’t ideal, with Wilson’s dead money looming. Overpaying for veterans could set the franchise back further. Instead of high-priced free agents, the Broncos could focus on second-tier players and bargain deals, similar to how teams like the 49ers and Bengals have built depth.
Another argument for patience is the quarterback situation. If Denver isn’t confident in a free-agent QB and doesn’t want to trade up in the draft, it may be wise to spend conservatively, develop young talent, and aim for a top quarterback in 2025.
A balanced approach makes the most sense. Denver should aggressively pursue key positions but avoid overspending in a year where their long-term future isn’t fully set. The right strategy? Build wisely, secure foundational pieces, and be ready to make a bigger splash in 2025 when the cap situation improves.
