Chase Sexton’s Challenge: What He Must Learn from Jett Lawrence to Avoid Costly Mistakes in 2025
Chase Sexton’s 2025 Supercross season is off to a rough start, as another costly mistake at Daytona forced him into the Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ). While he ultimately made it to the main event, his struggles have raised concerns about his consistency and ability to challenge for the championship.
Motocross legends Ricky Carmichael and Ryan Villopoto have weighed in on what Sexton needs to change in order to avoid further setbacks. According to them, the key lies in learning from his chief rival, Jett Lawrence.
One of the biggest differences between Sexton and Lawrence, according to Carmichael, is how they handle high-pressure situations. Lawrence has built a reputation for maintaining composure, even in chaotic races, whereas Sexton has been prone to costly errors when things get tense.
“Jett doesn’t get rattled,” Carmichael explained. “He knows how to stay in control, even when things aren’t going his way. That’s something Chase really has to focus on because you can’t afford big mistakes in a championship fight.”
Sexton’s fall in Daytona was not an isolated incident. He has had similar crashes in the past, often when trying to push the pace in critical moments. While his raw speed is undeniable, his ability to manage that speed effectively has been a recurring issue.
Villopoto echoed Carmichael’s sentiments but added that Sexton could also benefit from studying Lawrence’s approach to line selection and race management.
“Jett doesn’t always have to be the fastest guy on the track,” Villopoto noted. “He picks smart lines, conserves energy, and knows when to push and when to back off. Chase sometimes gets caught up in trying to go all-out, which can lead to mistakes.”
Lawrence’s ability to adapt to changing track conditions has been one of his greatest strengths. Rather than forcing the issue, he finds ways to maintain momentum while avoiding risky situations. Sexton, on the other hand, has at times struggled with decision-making under pressure, leading to unnecessary crashes.
Despite these challenges, Sexton remains one of the most talented riders in the sport. His speed and technique are on par with the best, but refining his racecraft will be essential if he wants to dethrone Lawrence and secure another championship.
With the 2025 season still in its early stages, there is time for Sexton to make adjustments. If he can learn from Lawrence’s poise and strategic approach, he has the potential to turn his season around and reassert himself as a title contender.
For now, though, the message from Carmichael and Villopoto is clear: raw speed alone won’t be enough. To win at the highest level, Sexton must develop the mental and tactical skills that have made Jett Lawrence such a dominant force in Supercross.
