Netflix Set to Release Documentary on Legendary Band War
Netflix is preparing to shine a spotlight on one of the most influential bands in American music history. The streaming giant has announced an upcoming documentary centered on War, the trailblazing multi-ethnic band known for blending funk, jazz, Latin, rhythm and blues, and rock into a socially conscious and sonically unique sound.
Titled The World Is a Ghetto: The Story of War, the documentary aims to trace the band’s remarkable journey from its early days in the late 1960s to its meteoric rise during the 1970s, when hits like “Low Rider,” “Why Can’t We Be Friends?” and “Cisco Kid” turned them into household names. With a mix of archival footage, never-before-seen interviews, and performances, the film seeks to capture not only War’s musical innovation but also its cultural impact during a turbulent era in American history.
The project is being produced in collaboration with War’s founding members and estate representatives, ensuring that the narrative remains authentic to the band’s legacy. According to Netflix, the documentary will delve into the band’s origins in Long Beach, California, its partnership with British rocker Eric Burdon, and how the group became a voice for peace and unity at a time when racial and political tensions were high.
Known for their genre-defying music and commitment to messages of harmony and social justice, War’s influence has echoed through generations of musicians and fans alike. The upcoming documentary is expected to not only celebrate their musical contributions but also examine the systemic and industry challenges the band faced over the decades.
The World Is a Ghetto: The Story of War is slated for release later this year. An official premiere date has yet to be confirmed, but fans can expect a compelling, in-depth portrait of a band that forever changed the sound and purpose of American popular music.
