Luka Dončić Sign Contract Extension with Lakers, Could Be Eyeing $418M Supermax in 2028
In a blockbuster move that has reshaped the NBA landscape, Luka Dončić has signed a contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, solidifying his role as the franchise’s centerpiece for years to come. The extension, while not yet reaching supermax status, strategically positions Dončić for a potential record-setting deal worth approximately $418 million in 2028.
Dončić’s extension comes just months after his high-profile trade from the Dallas Mavericks to the Lakers. The move initially disqualified him from signing a supermax deal, which is only available to players who remain with the team that drafted them. Had he stayed in Dallas, he would have been eligible for a five-year, $345 million supermax extension. However, by signing a shorter deal with a player option in 2028, Dončić keeps the door open for a larger payday once he reaches 10 years of NBA service—a key eligibility milestone for the supermax.
The Lakers, eager to build around Dončić, offered a four-year extension reportedly worth $229 million, including performance bonuses, trade clauses, and a player option for the 2028–29 season. Lakers General Manager Rob Pelinka called the move a “transformative commitment,” praising Dončić as a “generational talent and a cultural icon” who embodies the Lakers’ vision for the future.
Since joining Los Angeles, Dončić has lived up to expectations, averaging 30.1 points, 9.8 assists, and 8.6 rebounds per game. His leadership helped the Lakers achieve a 52–30 record and secure a strong playoff position. Off the court, his star power has energized the fanbase and significantly boosted the team’s marketability.
Looking ahead, if Dončić continues his elite performance and remains healthy, the 2028 supermax extension could be the most lucrative in NBA history, cementing his status among the highest-paid athletes globally. For the Lakers and their fans, the deal signals a new era of championship aspirations with Luka Dončić at the helm.
