Travis Fimmel Leads Vikings in Upcoming Epic: Journey to Valhalla

Fans of Viking lore and high-octane historical drama have something monumental to look forward to: Journey to Valhalla, an epic new Viking film starring Vikings series icon Travis Fimmel, has been officially announced.

Produced by Skarsgard Studios and directed by acclaimed filmmaker Rasmus Nygaard (The Long Fjord), the film promises a visually breathtaking and emotionally charged cinematic experience set in the brutal, mythic world of the Norsemen.

The Plot

Set during the twilight of the Viking Age, Journey to Valhalla follows Ragnar Thorsen (Fimmel), a legendary warrior haunted by visions of the afterlife and driven by vengeance. When his village is burned and his family slaughtered by a rival clan allied with treacherous Saxons, Ragnar assembles a fearsome warband and leads them on a final campaign that will etch their names into legend — or see them die trying.

Cinematic Brilliance

Early promotional material, including a powerful teaser poster, showcases Fimmel galloping across a snowy battlefield atop a black warhorse, a bloodied axe in hand, with hundreds of Vikings charging behind him through swirling snow and ash. A burning fortress looms in the distance as storm clouds gather — capturing the film’s themes of destiny, sacrifice, and divine reckoning.

Fimmel’s Return to Viking Glory

This marks a return to Norse territory for Travis Fimmel, whose breakout role as Ragnar Lothbrok in History Channel’s Vikings earned him international acclaim. In Journey to Valhalla, he portrays a new character — not a continuation of the TV saga — allowing him to explore a different side of Viking heroism: one more haunted, more battle-hardened, and closer to the edge of myth.

“This isn’t a story about survival — it’s about transcendence,” said Fimmel during a press briefing. “These men weren’t just fighting battles — they were trying to carve their place in eternity.”

Release and Anticipation

The film is currently in post-production and is expected to hit theaters globally in December 2025, just in time for the awards season. Rumors of a companion series or extended director’s cut for streaming platforms have already begun circulating.

With its sweeping cinematography, haunting score by Johan Söderqvist, and a cast that includes Scandinavian heavyweights like Mads Mikkelsen and Alicia Vikander, Journey to Valhalla is shaping up to be the defining Viking epic of the decade.
