When Mohamed Salah scored his late penalty against Newcastle on New Year’s Day, Liverpool fans may have had some mixed feelings. That was his last appearance before jetting off to AFCON.
The Egyptian had played a big part in all four goals against the Magpies, scoring two, assisting one, and producing a superb pass for Diogo Jota to lay it on a plate for Curtis Jones. It was practically the perfect performance, although it also perfectly demonstrated what Liverpool would be missing for the next few weeks.
With 18 goals and nine assists across all competitions for the Reds this season, Jürgen Klopp would have a tough time replacing his contributions—Trent Alexander-Arnold’s injury wouldn’t make things any easier. That is two big parts of the Liverpool attack removed, and for a while, it showed against Fulham as the Reds were frustrated.
