Just In: Van Morrison’s Manager Chris O’Donnell Unveils Hidden Secrets Behind Iconic Track “Into the Mystic”
In a rare and revealing interview, Van Morrison’s longtime manager Chris O’Donnell has shed light on the hidden layers behind one of the singer’s most cherished tracks, “Into the Mystic.” Originally released in 1970 as part of Morrison’s seminal album Moondance, the song has long been celebrated for its soulful, mystical ambiance and poetic lyricism. Now, O’Donnell is offering fans a deeper look into the spiritual and creative forces that shaped its creation.
According to O’Donnell, “Into the Mystic” was born during a particularly introspective period for Morrison, who was living in Woodstock, New York, at the time. “Van was constantly surrounded by nature and deeply immersed in Irish folklore and spiritual philosophy,” O’Donnell revealed. “The song is layered with maritime imagery, but it’s also a metaphor for returning to the soul, to a place of peace.”
O’Donnell explained that the track’s signature line — “I want to rock your gypsy soul” — was not just a romantic expression but a reference to Morrison’s fascination with the Romani culture and the idea of spiritual freedom. The sound of the foghorn, often noted by fans, was deliberately mixed to create a hypnotic effect that echoes the theme of a mystical journey.
Perhaps most surprisingly, O’Donnell shared that Morrison initially resisted including the track on Moondance. “He felt it was too personal, almost like a prayer,” said O’Donnell. “But the band convinced him its universal resonance made it too powerful to leave behind.”
Decades later, “Into the Mystic” remains a staple of wedding playlists and movie soundtracks, its allure undiminished. With O’Donnell’s revelations, listeners now have a richer context for understanding why the song continues to touch hearts across generations.
“Van never cared much for explaining his lyrics,” O’Donnell concluded, “but with this song, everything you need to know is right there in the feeling.”
