The San Francisco 49ers are highly interested in signing former Green Bay Packers linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, according to a source familiar with the situation as reported by NBC Sports Bay Area. Campbell is emerging as a prime target for the 49ers in free agency, especially following the collapse of their previously agreed-upon deal with veteran linebacker Eric Kendricks, who ultimately signed with the Dallas Cowboys instead. The 49ers are actively pursuing Campbell as a potential addition to bolster their linebacker corps and solidify their defense for the upcoming season.
The Green Bay Packers made the decision to release De’Vondre Campbell on Wednesday, utilizing a post-June 1 designation to free up a substantial $10.5 million in cap space for the 2024 season. Campbell, a seasoned NFL veteran at 30 years old, boasts an impressive eight-year career, having spent four years with the Atlanta Falcons, one with the Arizona Cardinals, and most recently, three seasons with the Packers.
In his standout 2021 campaign, Campbell earned the prestigious honor of being named first-team All-Pro. This recognition came on the back of an exceptional season where he recorded a career-high 146 tackles, along with two sacks, two interceptions, two forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery, showcasing his versatility and impact on the field.
Now, amidst the backdrop of Campbell’s impending free agency, the San Francisco 49ers emerge as potential suitors. The timing couldn’t be more crucial for the 49ers, as they navigate the absence of linebacker Dre Greenlaw, who is currently undergoing physical therapy to recover from a torn Achilles suffered in the Super Bowl. Campbell’s potential arrival could offer much-needed reinforcement to the 49ers’ linebacker corps, providing depth and experience as they aim to fortify their defense for the challenges ahead.
Upon joining the San Francisco 49ers, De’Vondre Campbell would form a formidable trio alongside three-time All-Pro Fred Warner and Dre Greenlaw, solidifying the team’s top linebacker unit.
Throughout his career, Campbell has demonstrated durability and consistency, making 110 starts in 115 appearances. However, he faced challenges last season, missing seven games due to ankle and neck injuries.
Despite not starting, Campbell made a significant impact in the 49ers’ pivotal 24-21 victory over the Packers in the NFC divisional round. He contributed with 40 snaps, tallying eight tackles, a quarterback hit, and a pass defensed, showcasing his versatility and ability to make plays in crucial moments.
Moreover, Campbell’s contributions extend beyond the field, as he was honored as the Packers’ nominee for the prestigious Walter Payton Man of the Year Award, highlighting his commitment to community service and philanthropy. His potential addition to the 49ers not only enhances their defensive prowess but also brings a strong leadership presence both on and off the field.
