Real Madrid’s Interest in Midfield maestro, Who Is Liverpool’s Opponent, Flattered
Liverpool signed four midfielders last summer in what was a complete revolution in the middle of the park. Following the departures of Jordan Henderson, Fabinho, Naby Keïta, James Milner and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, the qaurtet of Alexis Mac Allister, Wataru Endō, Dominic Szoboszlai and Ryan Gravenberch were all signed.
From that foursome, it was Mac Allister who performed best throughout the season. Endō, Szoboszlai and Gravenberch had their moments, but it was the Argentine who was the most consistent, a constant in the heart of the midfield under Jürgen Klopp.
Mac Allister made 33 league appearances for Liverpool in 2023-24, scoring five goals and producing the same number of assists. These are impressive figures when one considers the World Cup winner was played further back at the base of midfield more often than not — and his performances have caught the eye of Real Madrid.
According to website Football Insider, Real Madrid is showing an interest in signing the 25-year-old. For his part, the Argentina international is thought to be ‘flattered’ by the interest.
Mac Allister has only been at Liverpool for a season, and the allure of Real Madrid remains ever-powerful. However, encouragingly, Football Insider maintains that he is fully focused on playing for the Reds next season under Arne Slot and has no intention of leaving.
Mac Allister would be viewed by Madrid as a replacement for Toni Kroos, with the German midfielder recently announcing he will retire from the game after Euro 2024 at the age of 33. A report in Argentina suggests that Mac Allister has a release clause in his Liverpool contract for this summer, with an offer of $76m (£60m/€70m) enough to trigger it.
Mac Allister signed for Liverpool from Brighton last summer for an initial $44m (£35m/€41m) after four years with the coastal outfit. He has played 25 times for Argentina, and played a central role in the country’s World Cup success in Qatar in December 2022. The midfielder is likely to feature heavily again in the 2024 Copa América this summer, set to be hosted by the US.
Real Madrid, meanwhile, will face Borussia Dortmund in the final of the Champions League at Wembley Stadium on June 2 and have already secured the league, finishing 12 points clear of second-placed Barcelona. Kroos will be looking for the dream send-off, although so will comaptriot Marco Reus, who is bringing an end to his Dortmund career.
