Former NFL wide receiver Emmanuel Sanders recently sparked conversation among football fans with his strong defense of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. Sanders, appearing on the “Up & Adams Show” with Kay Adams, voiced his confusion and frustration over the ongoing underestimation of Purdy’s abilities, stating, “I just don’t understand why people keep sleeping on him”
These comments came in the wake of two controversial quarterback rankings. Pro Football Focus (PFF) ranked Purdy as the 13th best quarterback, notably placing him behind Jordan Love, a decision that left many scratching their heads. PFF’s ranking places Purdy in the “Melting Pot of Starters” tier, behind players like Trevor Lawrence and Love despite Purdy’s significant accomplishments in his early career
Adding to the debate, Chris Simms of Pro Football Talk released his own rankings, positioning Purdy even lower at 17th. Simms’ list had Purdy trailing behind quarterbacks such as Baker Mayfield and Kyler Murray. This ranking was particularly contentious given Purdy’s strong performances, including setting a franchise record for passing yards in his first full season as a starter for the 49ers.
Sanders, who has never played alongside Purdy, based his defense on observations and conversations with current 49ers players. He shared insights from 49ers wide receiver Deebo Samuel, who praised Purdy’s leadership and confidence in the huddle. According to Sanders, Samuel highlighted Purdy’s ability to inspire belief in his teammates, a critical trait for any successful quarterback.
Despite the skepticism from some analysts, Sanders remains confident that Purdy will continue to prove his doubters wrong. Reflecting on Purdy’s consistent success and his poised playstyle, Sanders concluded, “Keep sleeping on Purdy, he’s gonna prove them wrong.”
