Shanahan Reacts to ESPN Insider Jeremy Fowler’s Poll: “Brock Purdy Disrespect is Unwarranted”

The NFL offseason nears its end with training camps set to start this week, there is still plenty of “offseason” content to discuss. Recently, ESPN insider Jeremy Fowler polled nearly 80 league executives, coaches, and scouts to compile a list of the top 10 quarterbacks in the league. Unsurprisingly, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy did not make the list.

Here’s the top 10 as ranked by the experts:

1. Patrick Mahomes, Kansas City Chiefs
2. Joe Burrow, Cincinnati Bengals
3. Josh Allen, Buffalo Bills
4. Lamar Jackson, Baltimore Ravens
5. Matthew Stafford, Los Angeles Rams
6. Justin Herbert, Los Angeles Chargers
7. C.J. Stroud, Houston Texans
8. Aaron Rodgers, New York Jets
9. Jared Goff, Detroit Lions
10. Dak Prescott, Dallas Cowboys

San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has voiced his displeasure with the recent ESPN poll conducted by insider Jeremy Fowler, which ranked the top 10 quarterbacks in the league. The list, compiled with input from nearly 80 league executives, coaches, and scouts, omitted 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy, a decision that Shanahan finds baffling and unjustified.

The poll, a yearly endeavor by Fowler, aims to gauge the league’s consensus on quarterback talent. This year’s rankings featured the usual suspects, with stars like Patrick Mahomes, Joe Burrow, and Josh Allen dominating the top spots. However, the absence of Brock Purdy from the list has stirred controversy, particularly in the 49ers camp.

Shanahan did not mince words in his reaction to the poll.

“The Brock Purdy disrespect is unwarranted,” he stated firmly in a recent press conference. “Brock has shown time and again that he has what it takes to succeed at the highest level in this league. His performance last season was nothing short of remarkable, and to not see him even mentioned in the top 10 is a disservice to his talent and hard work.”

“It’s easy to look at his draft position and underestimate him,” Shanahan continued. “But what matters is what he does on the field, and he’s proven time and again that he can compete at the highest level. I believe in Brock, and so does this team,” he added.

Purdy was named an “honorable mention” along with Jordan Love (Green Bay Packers), Jalen Hurts (Philadelphia Eagles), Tua Tagovailoa (Miami Dolphins), Kirk Cousins (Atlanta Falcons), and Trevor Lawrence (Jacksonville Jaguars).

### When Will Brock Purdy Be Recognized as a Top Quarterback in the NFL?

Purdy’s early career accomplishments are impressive. He led the league in QBR in 2023 and took his team to the Super Bowl. He has more playoff wins (4) than Lamar Jackson (2), Dak Prescott (2), C.J. Stroud (1), and Justin Herbert (0). Purdy is tied with Matt Stafford in playoff wins, despite Stafford entering his 16th year. In his six career playoff games, Purdy has thrown six touchdowns and only one interception.

Purdy benefits from a talented roster and the offensive genius of Kyle Shanahan, but his performance speaks for itself. He consistently makes plays to win games while avoiding costly mistakes. Notably, both Patrick Mahomes and Josh Allen threw the second and fourth-most interceptions last season.

Based on his recent performance, Purdy deserves recognition as a top-10 quarterback. In the “What have you done for me lately?” NFL, Purdy has done plenty.
