“I’m a cyclist first and always will be,” Van Aert clarified. “Social media is something that just came with the job.” Despite his primary focus on training, racing, and pushing his limits on the road, Van Aert has amassed a significant online following. His posts range from training updates and race recaps to glimpses into his life off the bike, with his family and hobbies, which fans eagerly consume. “It’s nice to share my journey, but I don’t let it interfere with my performance. My heart is on the bike,” he explained.
When asked about how social media impacts his life as an athlete, Van Aert noted the positives and the pressures. “In some ways, it motivates me,” he said. “Knowing there are people out there who support me, who follow my ups and downs—it adds something special. But at the same time, there’s a responsibility. You have to think about what you’re sharing, and there’s always the risk of criticism, which can be tough.”
Van Aert also reflected on the reality of balancing fame with personal space. “It’s important for me to set boundaries. There are parts of my life I keep private, especially with my family,” he added. “Cycling is a big part of who I am, but it’s not everything.”
The interview revealed a thoughtful and grounded athlete who embraces his fans and the opportunities social media provides, while remaining dedicated to his sport. For Van Aert, the digital world is just an extension of his journey in cycling, but the passion he brings to each race remains unchanged.
