There was a significant shake-up at the running back position this offseason. Derrick Henry moved from Tennessee to Baltimore, while Saquon Barkley left New York for Philadelphia. Joe Mixon transitioned from Cincinnati to Houston, and Josh Jacobs made his way from Las Vegas to Green Bay.
Among these big names, the most surprising offseason standout in the RB market is J.K. Dobbins, who currently leads the NFL with 266 rushing yards at an impressive average of 9.9 yards per carry heading into Week 3. This level of performance is what many expected from the 25-year-old when he’s healthy, but that’s been a challenge; since being drafted by Baltimore in 2020, Dobbins has participated in only 24 out of 67 possible regular-season game.
This offseason, he signed a one-year, team-friendly deal with the Los Angeles Chargers, reuniting with Ravens teammate Gus Edwards and former Baltimore offensive coordinator Greg Roman. New head coach Jim Harbaugh emphasized a commitment to the running game, which the Chargers have executed effectively so far.
Dobbins has thrived in the Chargers’ ground game, delivering back-to-back performances of over 130 rushing yards and at least one touchdown. He became the fifth player since 1960 to achieve this in his team’s first two games of a season, joining the ranks of legends like O.J. Simpson and Jim Brown. Dobbins has looked explosive, even showcasing some gymnastics, and has recorded three runs of over 20 yards. As a key player in L.A.’s offense, he has helped the Chargers dominate defenses and control the clock, aligning with Harbaugh’s desired style of play.
Justin Herbert is the primary beneficiary of Dobbins’ success, as the strong run game has alleviated pressure on the quarterback to make big plays on every down. While this approach may not yield the same aerial excitement seen in previous seasons, it has proven effective for the team’s success.
Los Angeles is off to a 2-0 start for the first time since 2012. Their next challenge is against the undefeated Pittsburgh Steelers, who have a strong defense ranked second in points allowed, fifth in yards, and fourth against the run. This will be a tough test for Dobbins and the Chargers, especially on the road. However, if they maintain their strategy of a powerful run game while relying on Herbert for crucial plays, they could leave the eastern time zone with another win.
