The Calgary Stampeders proudly celebrate the induction of two esteemed individuals into the prestigious Canadian Football Hall of Fame’s 2024 class, recognizing their remarkable contributions to the Red and White legacy. Among the honored are defensive back and kick return virtuoso Marvin Coleman and defensive end extraordinaire Vince Goldsmith.
Hailing from Ocala, Florida, Coleman swiftly made his mark as a dynamic force within the Stampeders’ ranks. Initially captivating audiences with electrifying kick returns, he seamlessly transitioned into a defensive stalwart, solidifying his status as a dual-threat phenomenon. Throughout his illustrious seven-season tenure with Calgary, Coleman’s prowess earned him West Division all-star distinctions an impressive eight times, showcasing his versatility as both a shutdown cornerback and a game-changing special teams asset. Notably, he played a pivotal role in securing the Grey Cup for the Stamps in 1998, cementing his place in franchise lore.
Coleman’s impact extended far beyond his defensive prowess, etching his name in the annals of Stampeders’ history as the all-time leader in pivotal return categories, including punt-return yards, kickoff-return yards, and punt-return touchdowns. His ability to turn interceptions into instant momentum swings further underscored his multifaceted skill set, as he left an indelible mark on both sides of the ball.
Following a brief hiatus to test his talents in the XFL, Coleman returned to the CFL fold in 2001, donning the colors of the Winnipeg Blue Bombers before ultimately bidding farewell to the gridiron.
Meanwhile, Goldsmith, a formidable presence off the edge, showcased his pass-rushing prowess during his tenure with the Stampeders. A product of the University of Oregon, he formed a formidable tandem with Harold Hallman, wreaking havoc on opposing quarterbacks and terrorizing offensive lines. Over his three seasons in Calgary, Goldsmith amassed an impressive 33 sacks, contributing significantly to the team’s defensive dominance.
Despite his impactful stint in Calgary, Goldsmith’s CFL journey spanned across various locales, including notable stints with the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Toronto Argonauts, bookending a distinguished career defined by relentless pursuit of quarterback disruptions.
In addition to Coleman and Goldsmith, the 2024 Hall of Fame class features a stellar lineup of gridiron luminaries, including Weston Dressler, S.J. Green, and Chad Owens in the players’ category, alongside esteemed builders Ray Jauch and Ed Lavery. Furthermore, the Football Reporters of Canada media wing welcomes Farhan Lalji and Steve Daniel, highlighting the comprehensive celebration of excellence across all facets of the Canadian football landscape.
