In a move no one saw coming, former President Donald J. Trump, a long-time sports enthusiast, made headlines with an unexpected NFL endorsement. During an interview on Bussin With The Boys, hosted by Taylor Lewan and Will Compton, Trump revealed he’s a fan of San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy. The conversation, which veered from the lighthearted to the perplexing, touched on Trump’s admiration for the once-overlooked “Mr. Irrelevant.”
“Mr. Irrelevant. Well, not anymore. (Purdy’s) not irrelevant any longer. He’s just a great quarterback. It shows there’s a little luck in sports,” Trump commented, drawing a comparison between Purdy’s rise and that of NFL legend Tom Brady. “He wouldn’t have played except that everyone got hurt in front of him. They put him in, and they moved the ball. That was the end of that.”
Trump, who has been a regular at sporting events—including last month’s Georgia-Alabama showdown—has recently stayed in the sports spotlight. In addition to appearing on Bussin With The Boys, he teamed up with golfer Bryson DeChambeau for a YouTube series called Break 50, where they raised $250,000 for the Wounded Warrior Project. Trump has also forged close ties with UFC president Dana White, attending several events together.
But it’s Purdy that seems to have caught Trump’s attention, aligning the quarterback with a leader who knows a thing or two about defying expectations. While Purdy has become a divisive figure in NFL circles, with some claiming he’s a product of Kyle Shanahan’s system, Trump appears firmly in the QB’s corner. In fact, the 49ers quarterback has sparked intense debates among fans and commentators alike. Just last week, sports personality Colin Cowherd controversially picked Bo Nix over Purdy in a segment of The Herd
Trump’s endorsement might not tip the political scales, but in the world of football, it sure adds fuel to the ongoing Brock Purdy debate.
