Indiana Pacers star Tyrese Haliburton rooting for Iowa State friend Brock Purdy and San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl

Tomorrow’s Super Bowl LVIII showdown will feature the San Francisco 49ers squaring off against the Kansas City Chiefs. Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton, a proud Iowa State alum, will be passionately backing the NFC contender. Haliburton, who forged a bond with 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy during their time at Iowa State, remains steadfast in his support for his friend and the Niners. Their camaraderie blossomed as they led their Cyclone programs to success on the gridiron and hardwood, respectively.

“It’s cool to see us kinda both doing our thing,” Haliburton, who was recently named a 2024 NBA All-Star, said in late January. He’s been watching many of Purdy’s games, including watching parts of the NFC Championship Game on his phone at a restaurant.

As freshmen at Iowa State in 2018, Tyrese Haliburton and Brock Purdy first crossed paths during athlete courses held on campus over the summer. Haliburton was aware of Purdy’s reputation, knowing him as the highly recruited quarterback who had received a scholarship offer from Alabama, a testament to his talent on the field. Their bond deepened as they frequently shared rides on the bus shuttling athletes between campus and various facilities in Ames. These journeys became the backdrop for their burgeoning friendship, providing ample opportunity for them to connect and grow closer over time.

“I’m excited for him. It’s an exciting moment for him and his family,” Haliburton said of Purdy and his team’s success. He watches San Francisco when he can. “No surprise to see what he’s doing.”

Selected as the final pick in the 2022 NFL Draft by the San Francisco 49ers, Brock Purdy swiftly ascended to the role of starting quarterback for the team. Demonstrating remarkable skill, he concluded his rookie season on a high note and has since maintained his position as the Niners’ starter, showcasing his talent in every game this season. Now, as a Pro Bowl quarterback, Purdy has guided his team to the pinnacle of success, leading them to the Super Bowl.

Meanwhile, Tyrese Haliburton, a rising star in the NBA, boasts two All-Star appearances and is on the cusp of potentially earning All-NBA honors. His basketball prowess extends to the international stage, having represented Team USA in last summer’s World Cup. Despite their demanding schedules, Haliburton and Purdy maintain a close connection, regularly exchanging text messages.

Haliburton’s support for the 49ers is unmistakable, evident in his frequent donning of their jersey, including during a Pacers game while sidelined due to injury. With the Pacers away on a road trip, Haliburton will have the opportunity to fully immerse himself in the Super Bowl festivities and cheer on his beloved 49ers. Amidst his stellar season averaging 22.1 points and 11.7 assists per game, Haliburton eagerly anticipates witnessing Purdy’s quest for football glory.
