Brock Purdy is poised to make history as the most lowly drafted quarterback to start in a Super Bowl, aiming to guide the San Francisco 49ers to their first championship victory since the 1994 season. His challenge? Facing off against Patrick Mahomes and the reigning champions, the Kansas City Chiefs, who bested the 49ers in the Super Bowl showdown just four years prior.
Despite Purdy’s impressive performance as the starting quarterback since Week 13 of last season, there are skeptics who label him as merely a “system quarterback,” suggesting his success is attributed to the talent and coaching around him.
Buffalo Bills’ standout quarterback, Josh Allen, expressed on Fox Sports 1’s “Speak” that Purdy has exceeded expectations by making plays both through the air and on the ground, showcasing his ability to thrive outside the confines of the system. Allen also noted Purdy’s comparative success within the San Francisco system compared to other quarterbacks who have played there.
“He does more than what he is asked to do. He makes plays outside of the structure. He’s made some unbelievable plays with his feet and being able to extend some plays,” Allen said.
He will get to do so against Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs, who are the defending champs and defeated the 49ers in the Super Bowl four years ago.
Before Purdy took over, the 49ers’ starting quarterback for the majority of the time since Kyle Shanahan took over as head coach in 2017 was Jimmy Garoppolo, who is an above-average player but certainly has his limitations.
Unlike Garoppolo, who is now a member of the Las Vegas Raiders, Purdy makes quick and accurate reads, is mobile, can get out of the pocket and make accurate passes on the move, is accurate on passes beyond 15-20 yards, and can move the chains with his legs.
When questioned about whether he sees Brock Purdy as a “game manager” or a “game changer,” Josh Allen responded by questioning why anyone would label Purdy as merely a game manager. Allen highlighted Purdy’s journey from being overlooked to winning the Fed Air award and other accolades this season, showcasing his undeniable talent. Allen expressed frustration at the continued doubt surrounding Purdy’s ability to impact games on a significant level, emphasizing Purdy’s potential to be a difference-maker in the NFL.
“I wonder why people would call someone like Brock Purdy a game manager. From being Mr. Irrelevant, he has shown the whole world how good he is. He has just won the Fed Air award and many other awards this season. So I don’t see why all these people still doubt his potentials”
A victory in Super Bowl LVIII this Sunday would solidify Purdy’s place as one of the most legendary narratives in NFL history, establishing him as a player whose exceptional skill and remarkable achievements can no longer be overlooked or disputed. This triumph would elevate Purdy’s status to that of an NFL icon, showcasing his unparalleled talent and undeniable impact on the sport. It would serve as a testament to his resilience, determination, and unwavering dedication to excellence, securing his legacy as one of the all-time greats in football history.
