Judd Trump considers Ronnie O’Sullivan and John Higgins as the standards in snooker, even though Higgins hasn’t secured a title in the past three years. Trump, who defeated Higgins en route to the German Masters final, acknowledges the 48-year-old’s influence in the game.
In an impressive quarter-final showdown at Berlin’s Velodrom, Judd Trump secured a commanding 5-2 victory over John Higgins, showcasing his skills with breaks of 78, 74, 71, and 68. Despite already clinching three titles this season, Trump took a moment to commend the four-time world champion, John Higgins, who has faced challenges matching his earlier successes as he navigates the twilight of his career.
Trump praised Higgins, drawing parallels between their careers, comparing them to standard-setters like O’Sullivan. Despite recent setbacks against the German Masters finalist, the 34-year-old highlighted the evolution of his game, resembling Higgins’ early years. Trump emphasized his ability to clinch victories during crucial moments, reminiscent of Higgins’ earlier experiences. Reflecting on a pivotal moment in their recent match, Trump pointed out that a missed shot by Higgins at 3-3 ultimately became the deciding factor in the outcome.
“For me, he is still a good benchmark. We are meeting now where his level has probably just dropped slightly and mine has risen. Every time I play him I can still see he is up for it. I know it is going to be a fight. Along with Ronnie he is the benchmark. If I can beat that type of player I know I’m doing well.”
Higgins secured a victory over Mark Allen, paving the way for a face-off with Trump. Despite the triumph, the Northern Ireland star expressed melancholy over Higgins’ present form. The seasoned player, whose last triumph dates back to the 2021 Players Championship, is now actively seeking a resurgence by enlisting the assistance of a sports psychologist to regain his peak performance on the snooker table.
