Latest Ranking: Where Purdy ranks among NFL QBs on third-, fourth-down conversions

NFL quarterbacks are often evaluated based on their performance in high-pressure situations, particularly on third and fourth down. In this critical area, San Francisco 49ers quarterback Brock Purdy demonstrated exceptional skill during his first full season as the team’s starting quarterback.

According to data from Warren Sharp of Sharp Football Analysis, Purdy ranked second among all NFL quarterbacks in the regular season for third- and fourth-down conversion rates on passing attempts in 2023. The only quarterback with a higher conversion rate was Jordan Love of the Green Bay Packers, who notably faced the 49ers’ defense during a thrilling divisional-round game in January. Following Love and Purdy in this crucial statistic were Dallas Cowboys quarterback Dak Prescott, Philadelphia Eagles’ Jalen Hurts, and Minnesota Vikings’ Kirk Cousins, rounding out the top five.

The 49ers’ success on third downs was reflected in their overall performance, finishing the 2023 season ranked fourth in the NFL for third-down conversion rates. This team achievement underscores Purdy’s efficiency and effectiveness in these high-stakes situations.

Purdy’s prowess wasn’t limited to clutch plays on third and fourth down. The 24-year-old quarterback led the NFL in several key statistical categories, including passer rating (113.0), yards per attempt (9.6), and touchdown percentage (7.0%). His impressive 4,280 passing yards not only set a new personal best but also broke the 49ers’ franchise single-season record, previously held by Jeff Garcia.

Purdy’s outstanding performance throughout the season earned him Pro Bowl honors, making him the first San Francisco quarterback to receive this recognition in over two decades. As the 49ers prepare for the upcoming season, they do so with the confidence that they have a dynamic and reliable talent under center, poised to be their franchise quarterback for many years to come.
