Netflix to Release Documentary on Legendary Musician Pete Townshend
Netflix has announced the upcoming release of a new documentary centered on legendary British guitarist and songwriter Pete Townshend, co-founder and creative force behind the iconic rock band The Who. The feature-length film is set to explore Townshend’s extraordinary career, personal struggles, and his groundbreaking contributions to rock music.
According to early details shared by the streaming platform, the documentary will include never-before-seen archival footage, intimate interviews with Townshend and key figures in his life, and rare performance clips that span decades of his work. The project aims to provide an in-depth look at Townshend’s musical evolution—from his early days in London’s mod scene to his pioneering work in rock opera and concept albums, such as Tommy and Quadrophenia.
Netflix is collaborating with acclaimed music documentary director and producer Murray Cummings, known for his work on Songwriter with Ed Sheeran. The film is expected to offer viewers a nuanced portrait of Townshend, highlighting not only his success with The Who but also his solo projects, his innovative approach to songwriting, and his complex relationship with fame and artistry.
The streaming service has not yet confirmed an exact release date but hinted at a late 2025 premiere. This announcement adds to Netflix’s growing slate of music-centered documentaries, following recent releases featuring David Bowie, Taylor Swift, and Kanye West.
Pete Townshend, now in his late seventies, remains a towering figure in the music industry. His influence is widely credited with shaping modern rock music through his explosive guitar work, introspective lyrics, and his willingness to experiment with musical form and technology. With this documentary, Netflix seeks to bring his story to a new generation of fans while offering longtime followers a fresh, intimate perspective on his life and legacy.
