NLF Analyst Mike Payton Told Aidan Hutchinson To Reject Lions Contract Extension

NFL analyst Mike Payton of A to Z Sports has advised Detroit Lions defensive end Aidan Hutchinson to forgo signing a contract extension this offseason. Instead, Payton suggests that Hutchinson should opt for the fifth-year option, projected to pay a fully guaranteed $22.61 million in 2026.

Hutchinson, who suffered a broken left fibula and tibia during a Week 6 game against the Dallas Cowboys in the 2024 season, had an impressive start with 7.5 sacks, seven tackles for loss, and 45 quarterback pressures before his injury. By playing under the fifth-year option and demonstrating a strong performance in the 2025 season, Hutchinson could position himself to become the highest-paid non-quarterback in the league in 2026.

Analysts agree that waiting could be beneficial for Hutchinson. Brad Berreman of SideLion Report noted that the Lions have a history of compensating their players well and that Hutchinson could secure a contract at or near the top of the market for his position. By waiting, especially after a standout season, Hutchinson could command a higher salary as the market for edge rushers continues to rise.
