After no Baal, no Koksijde tomorrow, but probably also no Dendermonde (5/1) for Mathieu van der Poel who suffers from ribs pain. The next time we should see MVDP back in action should be February 2nd at the World Champion.

Mathieu van der Poel, one of the most celebrated figures in cyclocross and road cycling, is facing a challenging start to the new year as rib pain continues to sideline him. After skipping Baal on New Year’s Day, the Dutch superstar has confirmed he will also miss the iconic Koksijde race. Unfortunately, it appears increasingly unlikely that he will be able to participate in Dendermonde on January 5th.

Van der Poel sustained the injury during a hard crash in a recent race, and the lingering discomfort has forced him to prioritize recovery over competition. Known for his aggressive and technical riding style, Van der Poel’s performances are built on physical resilience and precision, making full recovery essential before he returns to the demanding cyclocross circuits.

While the absence of Van der Poel from these high-profile events is disappointing for fans and the sport alike, the decision to focus on rehabilitation underscores the importance of long-term goals. The 28-year-old has his sights set on the Cyclocross World Championships, scheduled for February 2nd. The prestigious event represents an opportunity for Van der Poel to compete for his fifth elite world title in cyclocross, and his preparation is now fully geared toward being in peak condition for this challenge.

Van der Poel’s absence leaves the door open for rivals such as Wout van Aert and Tom Pidcock to seize the spotlight in upcoming races. However, his eventual return is sure to reignite the fierce competition that fans have come to love.

In the meantime, Van der Poel is focusing on a careful recovery process, involving physical therapy and adjusted training sessions to avoid aggravating the injury. He remains optimistic about his prospects for the World Championships, stating, “It’s frustrating to miss these races, but my goal is to return stronger and ready to compete at the highest level.”

Cycling enthusiasts around the globe eagerly await his return, hoping to witness yet another legendary performance from the Dutch phenomenon.
