‘Nothing suspicious’ – Tadej Pogacar and Jonas Vingegaard defend carbon monoxide rebreathing
Tadej Pogačar and Jonas Vingegaard have come forward to address concerns surrounding their use of carbon monoxide rebreathers during the Tour de France, asserting that there is “nothing suspicious” about the practice. The innovative technique, which has sparked curiosity and debate within the cycling community, involves inhaling low levels of carbon monoxide to potentially enhance athletic performance by increasing red blood cell production.
Pogačar, the two-time Tour de France champion, was quick to defend the method, emphasizing its legitimacy and adherence to regulations. “We’ve been transparent about our training methods and equipment. The carbon monoxide rebreather is just another tool in our arsenal to optimize performance. Everything we do is within the rules,” he stated. He further elaborated that the use of such technology is monitored and approved by the relevant authorities, ensuring that no unfair advantage is gained.
Vingegaard, the reigning champion, echoed Pogačar’s sentiments, highlighting the importance of innovation in the sport. “Cycling is always evolving, and athletes are continually seeking ways to improve. The rebreather is part of our effort to push boundaries while staying clean and fair. There’s nothing suspicious about using scientifically-backed methods to enhance our training,” he explained.
The controversy surrounding the rebreather stems from its novel application and the potential ethical implications. Critics argue that it could blur the lines between permissible performance enhancement and doping. However, both Pogačar and Vingegaard have stressed that their use of the device is completely transparent and compliant with the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) regulations.
In response to the skepticism, their teams have released detailed explanations and data to dispel any doubts. The riders’ performances remain under scrutiny, but their commitment to transparency and adherence to the rules has been a key part of their defense.
As the Tour de France progresses, the debate over the carbon monoxide rebreather is likely to continue. However, Pogačar and Vingegaard’s firm stance on the matter underscores their dedication to fair competition and the responsible use of cutting-edge technology in sports.
