Raiders waive Jack Jones, re-sign five ERFAs.
The Las Vegas Raiders have made a key offseason roster move by waiving cornerback Jack Jones, a decision that comes after the team was unable to find a trade partner for the 26-year-old defender. Jones was initially claimed off waivers from the New England Patriots in November 2023 and made an immediate impact, starting in several games during the second half of the season. Despite his contributions, including three interceptions and 16 passes defended, the team has opted to move on, saving approximately $3.4 million in cap space.
Jones’ release marks another chapter in his rollercoaster NFL career. After a standout college tenure at Arizona State, he was selected by the Patriots in the fourth round of the 2022 NFL Draft. While he showed flashes of potential, off-field issues and inconsistencies in performance led to his departure from New England and, now, Las Vegas. The Raiders are expected to explore other options in the draft and free agency to bolster their secondary depth.
In addition to waiving Jones, the Raiders also announced the re-signing of five exclusive rights free agents (ERFAs), solidifying depth across multiple positions. The players returning for the 2025 season include defensive tackle Matthew Butler, linebacker Kana’i Mauga, guard Jordan Meredith, defensive end Charles Snowden, and cornerback Sam Webb. Each of these players has shown promise in either a rotational or special teams role, and their return ensures continuity within the roster heading into training camp.
Re-signing ERFAs is a low-cost strategy that allows the team to maintain control over young, developing talent while evaluating their long-term fit. These moves reflect general manager Tom Telesco’s emphasis on roster flexibility and competition at every position.
With these roster adjustments, the Raiders continue to shape their identity under new leadership, aiming to build a balanced and competitive squad for the 2025 campaign. The team’s focus will now shift toward the upcoming NFL Draft, where they hold multiple picks and hope to add impact players to complement the existing core.
