San Francisco 49ers Secure Playoff Momentum with Key Roster Adjustments, Featuring…

49ers Activate Ray-Ray McCloud from Injured Reserve in Playoff Preparation; Tight End Ross Dwelley Moved to IR Ahead of Regular Season Finale

Ray-Ray McCloud, the 49ers’ seasoned return specialist, returns from a stint on the Injured Reserve, potentially shoring up a crucial area for the team’s playoff ambitions. Meanwhile, tight end Ross Dwelley finds himself on the Injured Reserve due to an ankle injury that has sidelined him for more than a month.

McCloud’s absence, stemming from fractured ribs, sidelined him for the past five games. His availability for the upcoming regular-season finale against the Los Angeles Rams presents a potential boost for the top-seeded 49ers (12-4). Although some key players like Brock Purdy and Christian McCaffrey are expected to sit out, the game could see appearances from other regular starters alongside McCloud in a match that holds no bearing on the Niners’ playoff positioning.

However, the receiving squad faces setbacks with Jauan Jennings (concussion) ruled out for his third consecutive game and Danny Gray (shoulder) remaining sidelined.

For Sunday’s game, the 49ers have elevated two practice-squad players: running back Jeremy McNichols and safety Tayler Hawkins. Meanwhile, fullback Kyle Juszczyk’s status is questionable due to an illness newly added to the injury report.

On the Rams’ side (9-7), a potential wild-card seeding between Nos. 6 or 7 is at stake with a victory. Nevertheless, they, too, are opting to rest key starters, such as quarterback Matthew Stafford, running back Kyren Williams, and defensive tackle Aaron Donald, in preparation for the playoffs.

“Ray-Ray McCloud’s punt return average this season stands at 8.5 yards, marking his lowest since 2019, with no return surpassing 19 yards. However, his reliability in ball security has become a sought-after asset, particularly after a shaky performance from rookie Ronnie Bell, who filled in during McCloud’s absence over the past month. Despite McCloud’s single fumble this season, teammate Oren Burks managed to recover it, and that was during McCloud’s last game action on Thanksgiving in Seattle.

Despite his on-field contributions, McCloud didn’t secure a spot among the 49ers’ 12 alternates listed for the Pro Bowl, despite finishing at the top among NFC return specialists in fan voting for the annual all-star event. Throughout the season, McCloud has showcased his versatility, recording nine receptions for a total of 113 yards.”
