San Francisco 49ers Urged to Re-Sign Former Top Draft Pick

49ERS . American Football . NFL Article

The San Francisco 49ers made a bold move during the NFL trade deadline, acquiring Chase Young to bolster their defensive line alongside Nick Bosa. However, despite the initial excitement, there’s a looming possibility of losing Young in free agency.

Young’s performance was somewhat underwhelming initially after joining the team, recording just 2.5 sacks in nine games during the 2023 season. Nevertheless, he showcased his potential during a standout performance in the Super Bowl loss against the Kansas City Chiefs, proving to be a formidable force on the field.

Following a strong finish to the season, CBS Sports singles out Young as the top priority free agent for the 49ers, emphasizing that they can’t afford to let him slip away.

Garrett Podell of CBS Sports highlights the significance of the trade that brought Young from the Washington Commanders to the 49ers, noting that they sacrificed a 2024 third-round pick to secure his services. Podell emphasizes the importance of retaining Young, suggesting that a one-year “prove-it” deal could be a viable option for both parties, especially considering Young’s modest statistical output of 3.5 sacks and a pressure rate of 11.9%.

“Young has potential, but there were too many times this past season when he was going through the motions. Perhaps a full season with the NFC champions could help him shake some of the bad habits he built up in Washington.”

Retaining Young with the 49ers appears logical, particularly when considering the dearth of top-tier talent at his position in the upcoming draft class.

Given the current landscape of the NFL draft prospects, where star power along the defensive line seems scarce, it further underscores the importance of securing Young’s presence on the team. With uncertainties surrounding the potential impact of incoming rookies, keeping a proven talent like Young in the fold provides stability and depth to the 49ers’ defensive unit.

Injuries have been a significant factor in Chase Young’s inability to fully meet the lofty expectations set during his standout tenure at Ohio State and his subsequent selection as the No. 2 overall pick by the Washington Football Team.

Despite this, Young enters free agency at an opportune moment, as the available pool of pass-rushing talent lacks both depth and quality across the board. This sets the stage for Young to potentially capitalize on the market conditions and secure a favorable deal.

Spotrac’s analysis suggests that Young may need to entertain the idea of signing a “prove-it” deal this offseason. This type of contract typically allows players to showcase their abilities and prove their worth over a shorter period, often resulting in a more lucrative long-term contract down the line.

Projected at a one-year contract valued at $13 million by Spotrac, Young would slot in as the 16th-highest-paid defensive end in the league. While this figure may seem modest compared to some of the league’s top earners, it still represents a significant investment for any team looking to bolster their pass rush.

For Young, this presents both an opportunity and a challenge. On one hand, it offers him the chance to demonstrate his skills and potentially earn a more lucrative contract in the future. On the other hand, it places added pressure on him to perform at a high level and prove his value on the field.

As the offseason unfolds and teams evaluate their roster needs and financial constraints, Young’s free agency journey will undoubtedly be closely monitored by fans, analysts, and NFL insiders alike.

Spotrac’s assessment suggests that Chase Young could potentially secure a one-year contract valued at $13 million, positioning him as the 16th highest-paid defensive end in the league.

Should Young ultimately sign such a deal, it could draw significant attention from teams seeking to bolster their pass rush. The Houston Texans, boasting a substantial $70 million in available cap space, emerge as a compelling candidate. With the opportunity to pair Young alongside burgeoning talent Will Anderson Jr., the Texans could form a formidable defensive front capable of wreaking havoc on opposing offenses.

Similarly, the Detroit Lions, armed with over $54 million in cap space, present an intriguing destination for Young. In need of reinforcements on the opposite side of the defensive line to complement standout Aidan Hutchinson, the Lions could view Young as the missing piece to fortify their pass rush and elevate their defensive prowess.

As the offseason unfolds and teams weigh their options, the potential landing spots for Chase Young will undoubtedly be subject to speculation and scrutiny. With ample cap space and a pressing need for pass-rushing talent, both the Texans and Lions could emerge as frontrunners in the pursuit of the dynamic defensive end.

Securing Chase Young’s return to the San Francisco 49ers may prove challenging due to the team’s current cap constraints.

As it stands, general manager John Lynch and the 49ers find themselves $3.4 million over the cap, presenting a financial hurdle in retaining Young. Any potential deal to re-sign Young would likely necessitate spreading out his cap hit over multiple seasons in the future. While this approach could provide temporary relief, it also poses its own risks and challenges.

One potential complication arises from the impending contract negotiations with quarterback Brock Purdy, whose significant contract demands loom large on the horizon following the 2025 season. Balancing the financial commitments to both Young and Purdy could strain the team’s cap resources and impact their ability to retain key players and address roster needs effectively.

Navigating the delicate balance between managing the cap, retaining key talent, and planning for future contract extensions remains a crucial task for Lynch and the 49ers front office. The decisions made in this regard will shape the team’s trajectory and competitiveness in the seasons to come.
