Stoke City’s star midfielder makes an unexpected move at Tottenham Eye

Stoke City added Dutch midfielder Burger to their ranks last summer, bringing him in from FC Basel.
He looked to be a coup at the time having impressed in Switzerland, sampling European football with the club and catching the attention of teams at a higher level than the Potters.

However, it was the Championship outfit who struck a deal, and it didn’t take long for Burger to become key. He managed four goals and four assists in 41 games in his debut campaign, even captaining the side for a spell in the middle of the season.
Now, it is claimed the 23-year-old is drawing some high profile interest.
TEAMtalk claims that Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur are keen on the influential Stoke City midfielder. There are two other unnamed top-flight sides said to be admirers of Burger, while relegated Sheffield United are interested too.
It is said that £12m could be enough to get a deal done, a price tag that appeals to many.
A quick move up the leagues?

Burger looked like a coup at the time of his move to Stoke City and a step up to the Premier League after just one year at the club would affirm that.
Time will tell just who the unnamed Premier League admirers are, but Tottenham Hotspur’s interest shows just how highly the Dutchman is rated away from the Bet365 Stadium.
A £12m deal would mark a swift profit on Burger but if interest grows, it might be that a deal creeps above that total.
Burger has three years left on his contract with the Potters, so the club are in a strong negotiating position. If competitive bids start coming in, we could see a real scrap for his services this summer.

Tempted to cash in?

Stoke City are in a decent financial position it seems, even after their busy summer of 2023. That means Steven Schumacher should be able to make some strong additions without a firesale of key assets.
That said though, should a big bid come in for a prized asset like Burger, the funds from that could only strengthen their bank balance ahead of what is set to be another busy few months in the transfer market.
The sale could facilitate some bigger deals than originally planned, allowing the Potters to set their aims higher for the new season.
Time will tell if anything comes of the links but with the window approaching, further speculation over Burger’s future may not be far away.
