Former Olympic road race champion Samuel Sánchez has openly acknowledged the near-unbeatable form of Tadej Pogačar, describing the Slovenian as “impossible to follow” in his current dominance of the cycling world. In a recent interview, Sánchez expressed his admiration for Pogačar’s relentless performances, admitting that he struggles to envision anyone stopping the all-conquering rider in the near future.
“Pogačar is impossible to follow,” Sánchez stated, highlighting how Pogačar’s physical strength, tactical brilliance, and mental fortitude make him a force few can compete with. Having watched Pogačar rise to prominence with back-to-back Tour de France titles and multiple Monument victories, Sánchez pointed out that his ability to attack from almost anywhere in a race sets him apart from the rest of the peloton. “He has an unmatched ability to break away at any moment and leave everyone behind,” Sánchez said.
Sánchez, a veteran of many high-level races, acknowledged the psychological pressure Pogačar puts on his rivals. “It’s not just his legs, it’s his mind. The way he races with such confidence, it demoralizes his competitors before the real battles even begin,” he added. Riders who once believed they had a chance are now left wondering how to handle the Slovenian’s aggressive and unpredictable style.
Despite the admiration, Sánchez also expressed sympathy for Pogačar’s competitors, who face the nearly impossible task of matching his consistency and versatility. “He’s strong in the mountains, fast in time trials, and unbeatable in one-day classics. Where do you find a weakness?” Sánchez questioned, emphasizing that Pogačar’s all-around capabilities make him one of the most complete riders in cycling history.
As the 2024 season unfolds, Sánchez believes the peloton will continue to chase Pogačar, but with each passing victory, he cements his position as the rider to beat. “Right now, it’s hard to see anyone stopping him,” Sánchez concluded.
