Tadej Pogačar’s dominance in cycling has not only pushed his rivals to their limits but also made veteran cyclist Wout Poels question his own future in the sport. In a recent interview, Poels admitted that watching Pogačar’s extraordinary performances during major races made him wonder if it was time to consider stepping away from professional cycling.
“Seeing Tadej perform at that level made me think, ‘Should I stop?’” Poels revealed. As a seasoned rider with a long and successful career, including wins in the 2021 Vuelta a España stage and the 2023 Tour de France mountain stage, Poels has seen the sport evolve rapidly. However, Pogačar’s rise to prominence has brought a new level of intensity and competitiveness, especially in the Grand Tours, where the Slovenian rider has dominated with his aggressive tactics and powerful climbs.
Poels, known for his own climbing prowess, found himself grappling with the idea of continuing to compete against a younger generation of riders like Pogačar. “Tadej is just on another level sometimes, and when you’re in the race, giving your all, but he’s still a step ahead, it makes you question things,” he said.
However, Poels also expressed admiration for Pogačar’s talent, acknowledging the Slovenian’s impact on the sport. “He’s raising the bar for everyone, and that’s something you have to respect,” Poels said. But the mental toll of consistently competing against one of the greatest cyclists of this generation is something that has weighed heavily on him.
Despite his moment of doubt, Poels hinted that he’s not ready to hang up his bike just yet. “It’s tough, but I still love this sport. I think every rider reaches a point where they question their future, especially when someone like Tadej is constantly pushing the limits,” Poels reflected.
For now, Poels seems determined to continue, using Pogačar’s incredible performances as motivation to stay competitive, even if it means rethinking his approach in a rapidly changing cycling landscape.
