The San Francisco 49ers have the potential to create enough salary cap space to extend Brandon Aiyuk’s contract, but there’s a possibility they might trade him instead. Here’s why they could consider it.
Firstly, while the 49ers can afford Aiyuk’s extension, they might hesitate due to his limited involvement in the passing game so far. Aiyuk’s potential extension could cost them over $25 million per season, yet he only caught three passes in each of their three playoff games this year. They didn’t give him many opportunities to shine.
As long as the 49ers heavily rely on their running game and spread the ball around in the passing game, Aiyuk may not reach his full potential. He could thrive on another team that commits to targeting him with around nine or ten passes per game.
Secondly, wide receivers are often seen as replaceable in the NFL, as demonstrated by the Kansas City Chiefs. They traded Tyreek Hill to the Dolphins and still managed to win back-to-back Super Bowls. The Chiefs prioritize investing in their offensive linemen rather than spending big money on wide receivers or running backs.
The 49ers could take a page from the Chiefs’ playbook. They could potentially trade Aiyuk for a high first-round pick and use it to draft an offensive tackle who could start right away on the right side. This move would also provide insurance for the future when Trent Williams eventually retires. Then, the 49ers could use their own first-round pick to find a replacement for Aiyuk.
Now, I’m not saying this is the right move, but if the 49ers do decide to trade Aiyuk, these are some of the reasons that could influence their decision. NFL teams often weigh various factors when considering roster moves and long-term plans.
