Cycling star Wout van Aert has opened up about what has been a particularly challenging year for him, both professionally and personally. In a candid reflection, the Belgian athlete shared his struggles throughout 2024, acknowledging that the season was marked by unexpected setbacks and tough moments. Despite his remarkable performances, including podium finishes in major races, van Aert emphasized the difficulty of staying at the top level of the sport amid personal and physical challenges.
“This year has been tough in many ways,” van Aert admitted, noting that the pressures of competing at the highest level, combined with the physical toll of the sport, took a significant mental and emotional toll on him. Injuries, high expectations, and the constant pursuit of perfection all weighed heavily on the 29-year-old cyclist. Yet, he expressed gratitude for his resilience and for the lessons learned along the way.
Amid the strain of the season, van Aert found comfort and solace in spending quality time with his family. After a grueling year, the cyclist decided to take a well-earned break and retreat with his loved ones on a family vacation. “I’m happy to close this chapter with my family, to recharge and appreciate the simple joys of life,” he said, reflecting on how important it is to disconnect and refocus.
The vacation has provided van Aert with a much-needed mental reset, allowing him to reflect on the highs and lows of the year while embracing the support and love of his family. With 2024 behind him, van Aert looks forward to a fresh start in 2025, drawing strength from the lessons of the past year and the sense of balance he’s rediscovered during his time away from the cycling world.
As he prepares for the upcoming season, van Aert remains determined to continue his journey in cycling, with renewed motivation and the unwavering support of those closest to him.
